Origin
Old Thai manuscripts from before 1700 already mention a breed of cat remarkable for its shiny brown coat. The breed was introduced to the United States by Dr Joseph C. Thompson, who brought a brown female cat named Wong Mau back from Rangoon in 1930. Wong Mau is considered the founder of the breed.

Character
The Burmese is a very sociable, affectionate and playful cat. It remains active and mischievous throughout its life and loves human company. It is often described as a dog in a cat's body.

Care
The Burmese is very easy to care for. Its short, shiny coat needs little attention — occasional polishing with a chamois cloth is sufficient.

Body: medium-sized, compact, muscular and heavy for its size.

Head: rounded, wide between the ears, short face.

Eyes: large, round or almond-shaped. Colour yellow to gold.

Ears: medium to large, slightly tilted forward.

Coat: short, very fine, shiny and lying close to the body.

Colour: sable brown, chocolate, blue, lilac, red, cream, tortoiseshell and blue-cream.
