Origin
Cats with short tails existed in China over a thousand years ago. In Japan they were popular at the imperial court. The famous "Maneki-neko" often depicts a Japanese Bobtail. The breed was introduced to the US in the 1960s.

Character
Active, intelligent and affectionate. Very sociable, gets along well with children and other animals. Known for its melodious voice.

Body: medium length, muscular, elegant. Hind legs slightly longer.
Head: equilateral triangle, prominent cheekbones, broad muzzle.
Eyes: large, oval. All colours.
Ears: large, well spaced, upright.
Tail: short, unique, forming a pom-pom.
Coat: short to semi-long, silky, little undercoat.
Colour: all colours. Mi-ke (tricolour) is traditional.
