Origin
The Somali is a longhaired Abyssinian. The longhair gene was latent in the Abyssinian breed. In the 1960s–1970s breeders, especially in North America, began developing this variant. The name "Somali" evokes a country neighbouring Ethiopia (the historical name for Abyssinia).

Character
Active, curious and intelligent. Very lively and playful, loves climbing and exploring. Affectionate without being clingy.

Care
Little undercoat; brushing twice a week suffices.

Body: medium length, muscular and elegant. Semi-foreign type.
Head: modified wedge, slightly rounded, slightly domed forehead.
Eyes: large, almond-shaped, well spaced. Amber, hazel or green.
Ears: large, wide at the base, slightly tilted, tufts desirable.
Tail: long and full, forming a plume (fox tail).
Coat: semi-long, fine and soft, little undercoat. Characteristic ticking.
Colour: ruddy, sorrel (red), blue and fawn. Ticking on each hair.
