Origin
The Sphynx is a hairless cat breed that appeared in 1966 in Toronto, Canada, due to a natural mutation. A male named Prune was the first known hairless cat of this breed. Breeding programmes with Devon Rex and domestic cats broadened the genetic base. The name refers to the Egyptian Sphinx. Today the Sphynx is one of the most recognisable and popular breeds in the world.

Character
Energetic, curious and exceptionally affectionate. Often compared to a dog for its loyalty and tendency to follow its owner everywhere. It loves people, is warm and cuddly — literally, as it seeks warmth from people and other animals.

Care
Although hairless, the Sphynx needs regular attention: the skin produces sebum that accumulates without a coat. Weekly bathing or wiping with a damp cloth is necessary. The ears also need regular cleaning.

Body: medium, muscular and heavier than it looks. Belly slightly rounded.
Head: wedge shape, prominent cheekbones and broad forehead.
Eyes: large, lemon-shaped and slightly oblique. All colours.
Ears: large to very large, wide apart, no hair inside.
Tail: long and thin, sometimes with a small tuft of hair at the tip.
Coat: hairless or with a very short barely visible down. Skin wrinkled.
Colour: all colours and patterns visible in the skin and down.
