Indoor or outdoor cat?

Your cat is naturally a true hunter who prefers to live outdoors. Sometimes, however, it is better to keep your cat indoors.

When is it better to keep my cat indoors?

In principle, a cat should be outside, as she is a true hunter who wants to explore. However, if you live near a very busy road or your cat is not completely healthy, it is better to keep her indoors.
One disadvantage is that your cat receives fewer stimuli indoors than outside and therefore gets bored more quickly. An indoor cat also gets less exercise than an outdoor cat.

Is every cat suitable as an indoor cat?

Not every cat is suitable to be kept indoors. Hunting is in your cat's nature and motivates her to go outside. Whether your cat can be happy without going outside depends on her character and what she is used to.
If you want an indoor cat, choose a breed known for its domesticity. Persians and Ragdolls, for example, have less need to go outside. They prefer to stay indoors and love to share life with their owners.
If your cat has always been indoors since she was a kitten, she doesn't know any different and that is her living environment. If she used to go outside and suddenly can't anymore, she may become unhappy and bored.

Because an indoor cat gets less exercise than her outdoor counterparts, you need to keep her sufficiently occupied. Adjust her diet to her activity level. The guidelines can be found on the packaging. There is also cat food specially for indoor cats. Ask for advice at your pet shop.

Other things that are important for the indoor cat:

• Give her enough space, set up a corner or room especially for her.
• Offer a scratching post to wear down her claws.
• Make sure she can climb easily and has plenty of lookout spots.
• By playing with her regularly, she gets extra exercise.
• Ensure a hygienic living environment and a clean litter box.
