Chronic kidney disease is one of the most common conditions in older cats. No less than one third of cats over 12 years old have some form of kidney disease. We tell you what it is and why it is so important to have your cat checked early by the vet.
What is chronic kidney disease?
Your cat's kidneys have important tasks, such as removing waste products, maintaining blood pressure, and producing hormones. With chronic kidney disease, the kidneys can no longer filter waste products properly from the blood. The waste products then build up, leading to all kinds of complaints. Chronic kidney disease is progressive, meaning the kidneys work less and less well over time.
Chronic kidney disease is not visible
Chronic kidney disease in cats is usually not visible. Symptoms of kidney disease only become apparent when 75% of kidney function is lost. You then often see that the cat drinks more, urinates more, loses appetite, loses weight and becomes less active.
Have your cat checked early
The vet can make a diagnosis as early as 25% loss of kidney function. Kidney disease is usually incurable, but with the right treatment, the progression of the disease can be slowed. This can improve the lifespan and quality of life of your cat. Therefore, have your older cat checked regularly by the vet.
Treatment of chronic kidney disease
With chronic kidney disease, the vet may prescribe medication to support the kidneys and reduce complaints. Special dietary food can also support kidney function. The main features of a kidney diet are:
- Less phosphorus. Less well-functioning kidneys cannot properly remove phosphorus from the blood. This further deteriorates kidney function.
- Adjusted level of high-quality protein. When the kidneys work less well, waste products accumulate in the blood. An adjusted amount of high-quality protein helps limit the burden on the kidneys.
- Energy-rich and tasty. Cats with chronic kidney disease often have a poor appetite. It is therefore important that they receive tasty food that gives them enough energy.
