Why can't my cat go outside straight away?

Do not let your cat outside immediately after a move or when you have just got her. She has a 'homing instinct', meaning she will head straight back to her old address. It takes about a month before your cat recognises her new home as home. Keep her inside for at least four weeks. Then gradually build up going outside step by step.

When your cat goes outside in a new environment for the first time, it is important to take it slowly. Walk with her or stay close by. Start simply in your own garden and gradually extend the area. Let your cat explore her new surroundings at her own pace. If you are worried she will run off, a cat harness is a good solution.

• Collar with a bell — people can see that your cat has an owner.
• Microchip and registration — your name and address are linked to your cat. If she goes missing and ends up at a shelter, staff will know she belongs to you.
• Scent marking boundaries — this helps your cat find her new home quickly. Does she like a particular toy? Put it in the garden.
• Recent photo — make sure you have a clear description in case your cat unexpectedly goes missing.

My cat is missing — what should I do?

If your cat goes missing, here are a number of things to do to find her:

• Hand out flyers in your neighbourhood.
• Contact vets and the local shelter. Your cat may have been brought there.
• Take food with you when searching and call her name.
• Tell as many people as possible that you have lost your cat.
