How do I make sure my cat drinks enough? - BCF VZW

Your cat with urinary problems needs to drink enough. How do you do that?

It is important that your cat drinks enough, especially if she has urinary problems. Unfortunately, cats are naturally poor drinkers. Here you will find tips to make your cat drink more:

  • Provide fresh and clean drinking water
Cats like clean and cold drinking water. Refresh the water bowl every day and twice a day in warm weather.
  • Place the water bowl as far away as possible from the food bowl
Cats prefer not to drink near their food. Place the water bowl far from the food bowl, at least two metres away.
  • Place the water bowl as far as possible from the litter box
Many cats do not like to eat and drink where they toilet.
  • Place water bowls in various spots around the house
Cats do not readily go looking for water. By spreading water bowls throughout the house, your cat will encounter water more often and will be more likely to drink.
  • Try different water bowls. Every cat has her preference.
Some cats dislike their whiskers touching the rim of the water bowl. Experiment with different bowls or try a deep plate.
  • Running water
Running water invites the cat to drink. Encourage your cat to drink more with a drinking fountain, for example.
  • Also try wet food
Wet food consists largely of moisture, more than dry food. It is therefore an easy way for your cat to take in more fluid. Read more about the benefits of wet food here.
  • Peace and quiet
Make sure your cat can drink in peace, without hustle and away from other pets.
