As an owner you are responsible for the health and well-being of your cat. You also have a responsibility towards your neighbours and society.

If you live in a busy neighbourhood or your neighbours are troubled by the cat, consider whether it is responsible to let your cat roam freely outside. If you still want to give the cat the outdoor life, you can make your garden cat-safe. It is better not to walk the cat on a lead, as this can cause a great deal of stress.

Cats are very fertile animals and reproduce quickly. As a result there are too many cats and shelters are overcrowded, which means more than ten thousand cats have to be put to sleep every year. In addition, unneutered toms spray and queens in heat disturb the neighbourhood. And did you know that cats have their own form of AIDS? It is not contagious for humans, but cats can infect each other through sexual contact and fights. Reasons enough to make sure your cat is neutered in time. This can be done from as early as 8 weeks of age.

If you do end up with a litter, you must have the kittens microchipped, registered and neutered yourself before they go to their new owners. Even if you give them away for free.
