Keeping your cat active and giving attention

What if you are often away for half a day or more for work? Your cat may be independent, but she still needs enough attention and activity.

How do I entertain my cat when I am not home?

A cat can generally manage well on her own, but she needs sufficient stimulation from her environment. If you have an indoor cat, she misses the adventure of the outdoors. Time for some cat entertainment! Open a window so scents and sounds come in — safely, so use a fly screen. Distribute toys across the various rooms your cat uses. Provide toys she can hunt and climb. Things that make noise often offer an extra stimulus. There are also toys specially designed for cats that are often alone. Ask for advice in your pet shop.

Attention, attention and more attention!

Do not forget to give your cat enough attention, especially if you are away a lot. Schedule at least two "quality time" sessions a day for you and your housecat. Give her attention by playing with her, stroking her and possibly brushing her. The occasional treat is always appreciated too.

By engaging with your cat daily, you build a close bond. You will notice this among other things when you come home and your cat is overjoyed to see you.

A friend for your cat

Sometimes toys and attention are not enough and a cat gets bored anyway. Then consider getting a second cat so your pet has a companion and never has to be alone again.

Allow for an adjustment period once you bring the new cat home. Even though your companion may feel lonely, a new animal in her territory is not a small thing. Give both animals time to get used to the new situation.
