What is and is not allowed for the cat at home

Your cat is part of your family. And just like the other household members need to follow certain house rules, so does she.

What may and may not the cat do at home?

Your cat sees your home as her territory. While it is wonderful to share your home with a cat, it is important to set boundaries where you see fit. For example, keep the doors of rooms she is not allowed in closed. She will then understand those rooms are not part of her territory. Even though she will keep testing the limits, your cat should not take control. Make it clear from the start what she is and is not allowed to do, and be consistent about it.

Why is consistency so important for my cat?

Cats cope poorly with change. It causes them stress. Think of a house move or a new family member. Changes in house rules are also confusing and stressful. If you have forbidden your cat from sitting on the table and then allow it later, she simply will not understand. That creates unrest. Make sure everyone in the household always applies the same rules.

Can I leave my cat home alone?

Cats can manage well on their own at home. Just make sure your cat has access to her food, water, bed and litter box. Also install a cat flap so she can go outside whenever she wants. Fresh air is not only good for your cat's health, it also helps combat boredom. Give indoor cats enough stimulation with a variety of toys so they can entertain themselves while you are away.

I leave my cat home alone during the holidays — is that alright?

Going on holiday and leaving your cat at home? Make sure someone comes by every day to give her fresh water and food and to clean the litter box. A little attention and a cuddle are of course part of the deal too. Is your cat not at all happy being alone at home? Take her to a good boarding facility or cattery instead.
